BVSC PRESENTS...
Product Description
From Amazon.com
It should never cease to amaze how spry and dramatically potent a force is the Buena Vista Social Club. The group--really a gaggle of aging Cuban maestros brought together for stunning all-star performances--keeps its footing in Cuban dance music at the same time as it revels in the lax tempo of layered hand percussion and traditional rhythms. Ibrahim Ferrer stepped to the international fore as the vocalist on the eponymous BVSC CD in 1997 and here furthers his already-obvious command of everything from sultry, horn-swaying ballads to gritty son tunes like "Mamí Me Gustá." Ferrer's tattered vocal inflections shape the more rollicking tunes so their texture is palpable, especially when belted in antiphonal give-and-takes with the rest of the huge band he totes along here. A 15-member-strong string section steps forward on the bolero tracks, which send off a smoldering passion that's startling in light of the BVSC's heightened, horn-charged charts. But the rich string passages color songs in wide brush strokes, which is to say that they heighten the passion to no end. Ferrer's debut might come in his twilight years, but it's a majorly luminous event. --Andrew Bartlett

The Weirdstone of Brisingamen (Complete Classics) [Audiobook, Classical] [Audio CD]
Product Description
Review
"Madoc exhibits his classical training at the RSC in his use of dialects, guttural pronouncements, and screams as the children and their protectors fight for their very lives. Selections of music composed by Arnold Bax lend an aura of creepy menace and gloom to selected sections throughout." -- Lolly Gepson "Booklist - July 2006"
The heart of the magic was sealed with Firefrost, the Weirdstone of Brisingamen...should Nastrond destroy the stone, then the magic will die away. When Colin and Susan are pursued by eerie creatures across Alderley Edge, the Wizard - Cadellin Silverbrow - takes them to safety deep in the caves of Fundindelve. Here he watches over the enchanted sleep of one hundred and forty knights, awaiting the fated hour when they must rise and fight. But the Weirdstone of Brisingamen is lost and the forces of evil are closing in. The children realise that they are the key to its return, but how can they defeat the powerful magic of the Morrigan and her deadly brood. First published in 1960, four decades before "Harry Potter", Alan Garner's novel of magic and wizards has endured and become a modern classic of children's literature.

The History of Tom Jones: A Foundling (Classic Fiction) [Abridged, Audiobook, Classical] [Audio CD]
Product Description
The Voice of the Year competition introduced and sponsored by Naxos AudioBooks and The Times Books Pages, edited by Erica Wagner, took place in Spring 2004. Readers without any formal drama training or professional acting experience were invited to send in recordings of a short extract of either Dickens, Austen or from The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame and an own choice. The judging panel, Martin Jarvis, Juliet Stevenson and Anton Lesser, with John Tydeman, David Timson and Christina Hardyment, audiobook reviewer for The Times, under the chairmanship of Naxos AudioBooks managing director Nicolas Soames, chose the winner and finalists from nearly 1000 entries. First prize was to read a classic for Naxos AudioBooks. The winner was Maurice West, a 55 year old English teacher from Croydon. His chosen piece was from Tom Jones and he was invited to read an extended abridgement - 6CD set - of the same novel. 'We were very impressed by the natural storytelling talent shown by Mr West, with a strong narrative character, a sense of period style as well as a firm grasp of the many characters who appear,' said Nicolas Soames. After graduating from Oxford, Mr West applied to LAMDA on the main acting course and was accepted. Unfortunately, he didn't have sufficient funds to take up the offer and had to confine his thespian interests to amateur dramatics. Now, later in life, he has a chance to open a new thread of activity. This 6CD recording of Tom Jones is an important addition to the 18th century audiolibrary on Naxos AudioBooks. With music of the period 2004 marks the first decade of Naxos AudioBooks, the premier label for classic literature with classical music. There is a special programme of releases with important highlights including Joyce" Ulysses read unabridged; The Story of Classical Music for younger listeners presented in association with Classic FM; and The Tempest with Sir Ian McKellen as Prospero. There will also be high profile promotions for the label throughout the year.

1001 Nights: Four stories from Arabian Nights
Product Description
Amazon.co.uk Review
The Naxos label has devised an excellent way of presenting Rimsky-Korsakov's symphonic suite Sheherezade on this cockle-warming CD performed by the Philharmonia Orchestra under Enrique Batiz: Bernard Cribbins has been recruited to recount between the orchestral episodes four of the 1001 bedtime stories which the eponymous brave princess tantalisingly told to her homicidal husband so that he would postpone murdering her as he had done more than a thousand of her predecessors. Concert performances of the work tend towards the monotonous as each wafting interlude falls upon the next, but Cribbins' warm, unhurried, avuncular delivery brings each on as refreshingly as a new dawn. The stories are Sinbad the Sailor, who was shipwrecked on the back of a whale, Prince Taj al-Mulak, who loved a girl he had never seen and two tales of one-eyed dervishes. David Nolan's twisting solo violin breathes hot Arabian breezes onto the ear. It is the gentle, mystical side of Islam which is presented here although the barbarity of Sheherezade's husband does have the hallmarks of Taliban misogyny. Still, Mr Cribbins makes an excellent storytelling wife in anyone's religion. --Rick Jones

Alfie
Product Description
CD Description
Alfie is a diverse collection of classics sung by the hugely popular tenor Alfie Boe. Bow turns his hand to the likes of "When I Fall In Love", Leonard Bernstein’s impassioned "Maria" from West Side Story and Ewan MacColl’s heartfelt "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face". Having teamed up with good friend Matt Lucas for a duet on his first album, the singer is this time joined by one of his heroes, rock legend Robert Plant. After a chance meeting in a bar, the two singers were soon in a studio recording this extremely moving version of Tim Buckley’s "Song To The Siren". Away from recording the album, Boe continues his incredible stint in Les Misérables, taking the lead role of Jean Valjean. On Alfie he is joined by "king of musical theatre", Michael Ball, for a duet version of "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables". Alfie takes us on a journey through the musicals, with the uplifting "Being Alive" from the musical Company, the all-time favourite "Music Of The Night" from Phantom of the Opera, George Gershwin’s jazz standard "Someone to Watch Over Me" from Oh, Kay!, "Wheels of a Dream" from the musical Ragtime and of course Jean Valjean’s own "Who Am I ('I’m Jean Valjean!')" from Les Mis.By : Alfie Boe | Format: Audio CD

Nutcracker & Christmas Eve
Product Description
Amazon.co.uk Review
The actress Prunella Scales is the narrator on this Naxos release which is unashamedly aimed at the children's Christmas market. Two seasonal works fill 64 minutes--Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite and Rimsky-Korsakov's Christmas Eve Suite. Scales is rather a plummy mother. Her elegant diction comes from a bygone dinner-party era. She sounds kind and warm but also somewhat distant as if she were the sort to employ a third party actually to bring the children up. One imagines her obedient junior audience demurely sitting in rows, not making a sound, restraining themselves even as the "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" twinkles magically from the speakers. Children may find this lap-forbidding. Nikolai Gogol wrote the story for Rimsky-Korsakov's opera Christmas Eve. A blacksmith fools the devil, obtains a pair of the Empress' slippers and wins the initially reluctant hand of the prettiest girl in town. Rimsky-Korsakov's music is more incidental to, and dependant on, the story than Tchaikovsky's, which may be performed without. Michael Halasz conducts the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra in the Tchaikovsky, Igor Golovschin the Moscow Symphony Orchestra in the Rimsky-Korsakov. All very charming in a children-should-be-seen-and-not-heard sort of way. --Rick Jones

Ulysses (Modern Fiction) [Abridged, Audiobook, Classical] [Audio CD]
Product Description
Amazon.co.uk Review
Ulysses has been labelled dirty, blasphemous and unreadable. In a famous 1933 court decision, Judge John M. Woolsey declared it an emetic book--although he found it not quite obscene enough to disallow its importation into the United States--and Virginia Woolf was moved to decry James Joyce's "cloacal obsession". None of these descriptions, however, do the slightest justice to the novel. To this day it remains the modernist masterpiece, in which the author takes both Celtic lyricism and vulgarity to splendid extremes. It is funny, sorrowful, and even (in its own way) suspenseful. And despite the exegetical industry that has sprung up in the last 75 years, Ulysses is also a compulsively readable book. Even the verbal vaudeville of the final chapters can be navigated with relative ease, as long as you're willing to be buffeted, tickled, challenged and (occasionally) vexed by Joyce's astonishing command of the English language.
Among other things, a novel is simply a long story, and the first question about any story is "What happens?" In the case of Ulysses, the answer could be "Everything". William Blake, one of literature's sublime myopics, saw the universe in a grain of sand. Joyce saw it in Dublin, Ireland, on June 16, 1904, a day distinguished by its utter normality. Two characters, Stephen Dedalus and Leopold Bloom, go about their separate business, crossing paths with a gallery of inforgettable Dubliners. We watch them teach, eat, loiter, argue and (in Bloom's case) masturbate. And thanks to the book's stream- of-consciousness technique--which suggests no mere stream but an impossibly deep, swift-running river-- we're privy to their thoughts, emotions and memories. The result? Almost every variety of human experience is crammed into the accordion-folds of a single day, which makes Ulysses not just an experimental work but the very last word in realism.
Both characters add their glorious intonations to the music of Joyce's prose. Dedalus's accent--that of a freelance aesthetician, who dabbles here and there in what we might call "Early Yeats Lite"-- will be familiar to readers of Portrait of an Artist As a Young Man. But Bloom's wistful sensualism (and naïve curiosity) is something else entirely. Seen through his eyes, a rundown corner of a Dublin graveyard is a figure for hope and hopelessness, mortality and dogged survival: "Mr Bloom walked unheeded along his grove by saddened angels, crosses, broken pillars, family vaults, stone hopes praying with upcast eyes, old Ireland's hearts and hands. More sensible to spend the money on some charity for the living. Pray for the repose of the soul of. Does anybody really?" --James Marcus --This text refers to the Paperback edition.
